An intensity-stabilised He-Ne laser for measuring small magneto-optic Kerr rotations from thin ferromagnetic films
نویسندگان
چکیده
The change in intensity of light transmitted through an analysing polariser after reflection from a ferromagnetic surface can be related to the magneto-optic Kerr rotation. The construction of an inexpensive apparatus for measuring small rotations based on the use of an external intensity stabiliser for a laboratory He-Ne laser is discussed. We examine the limitations on the signal-to-noise ratio as consequence of the detector noise, shot noise and technical noise present in the system. An intensity stability of 0.05% has been achieved and has enabled us to obtain hysteresis loops from a 5 nm thick iron film with a signal to noise ratio of 40:1 for a data collection time of 100 s.

Having precise hysterics loop of thin ferroelectric and ferromagnetic layers for optical switching and optical storages are important. A hysterieses loop can be achieved from a phenomenon call the magneto-optic effect. The magneto-optic effect is the rotation of a linear polarized electromagnetic wave propagated through a ferromagnetic medium. When light is transmitted through a layer of magnet...
متن کاملLongitudinal Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect in Ce:YIG Thin Films Incorporating Gold Nanoparticles
We report an experimental study on optical and magneto-optical properties of Cesubstituted yttrium iron garnet thin films incorporating gold nanoparticles. Au nanoparticles were formed by heating Au thin film on cubic quartz and garnet substrate in vacuum chamber and a Ce:YIG layer was deposited on them by the aid of Pulsed laser deposition method. A large enhancement of the longitudinal Kerr e...
متن کاملMagneto-optical properties of chromium-alloyed manganese bismuth thin films
MnBi thin films have been considered for short-wavelength rewritable optical recording media due to the very large magneto-optic Kerr rotation and perpendicular anisotropy (Ku) of the hexagonal magnetic low-temperature MnBi phase. However, coincident structural and magnetic transformations near the Curie temperature ~360 °C! result in poor thermal cycling behavior, preventing the application of...
متن کاملMagnetic and structural properties of epitaxial Fe thin films on GaAs(0 0 1) and interfaces
Fe(0 0 1) thin films (70 ( A) with Fe(7.2 ( A) tracer layers at the interface were epitaxially grown on GaAs(4 6) surfaces. Magneto-optic Kerr effect and Ferromagnetic resonance measurements indicate a dominant 2-fold in-plane magnetic anisotropy (easy axis along [1 1 0]) superimposed to a 4-fold anisotropy, and small coercivity (B10Oe). M . ossbauer (CEMS) measurements indicate no magnetic ‘‘d...
متن کاملNanorod Surface Plasmon Enhancement of Laser-Induced Ultrafast Demagnetization
Ultrafast laser-induced magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films were measured using a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser in a pump-probe magneto-optic Kerr effect setup. The effect of plasmon resonance on the transient magnetization was investigated by drop-coating the ferromagnetic films with dimensionally-tuned gold nanorods supporting longitudinal surface plasmon resonance near the cen...
